Grocery Trip Tuesday May 13th!

I didn't get up and do my shopping at 6:30 as planned today, but I did get out and run errands and finished with my shopping at Basha's and Albertsons.

I put gas in the truck~ gosh it hurts. The gas in Chandler is ranging from $3.43-$3.75 per gallon. I was at 0 miles left when I pulled in to the nearest station, and paid $3. 53/gallon. We put in $50~ so that will give us about 170 miles before we have to fill up again.
I know I will be planning every trip I make and won't be driving too far until these ubsurd prices fall down to a reasonable level...hmmm....$.50 a gallon would be nice, wouldn't it? (Snap out of it, it will never happen!)

With the gas prices so high, we have to turn any events that are on the West side of Phoenix, even if they are $200 events. It would be 2 round trips to that side of town, and $3.50 average a gallon...yeah..uhm! NOOO WAY!

Ok onto the grocery trip~ Here's what I spent.

I have no idea how you manage to feed that many people on so little money. We have a family of 4 and spend $100 a week every week. At least 80 of that is groceries. The other twenty is household and toiletries items. I do know that our grocery bill went up dramatically after I was diagnosed with diabetes because the healthier, whole grain items cost more =( WHY should eating healthy cost more???? They sure don't make it easy for the part of the country that's lower middle class to maintain a healthy lifestyle do they.

Gosh Tonya that is amazing that you spend so little for a such a big family! I spend over $100 a week for my family of 4. The news talks about how American families are over weight, but how can a lower and middle income family afford to eat healthy now a days? It is so much cheaper to buy junk food. I do try and refrain!LOL

I hear you, Christina!!! It is so tough to eat healthy on a budget. One resource I absolutely can't live without is "Saving Dinner" by Leanne Ely (from Flyldady). Most of the meals are healthy, and economical. Leanne actually has a book out called "Saving Dinner the Low Carb Way" for diabetics. She also has a menu mailer low in carbs. Here are the two links for them

and

Possibly look into buying produce from your local farms or using Angel Food Ministries~ much healthier options, and you can get a $100 value box of food for around $35-$50. There is a lady who puts together a menu to go along with the weekly/monthly angel food ministry boxes too.

I hope you can utilize some of the ideas. Let me know hon!
